On February 17, 2021, the PEFA Secretariat hosted the International webinar on Public Financial Management in the 21st Century: "Harnessing Data for Better Policy Making". The event begun with the launch of the inaugural version of the Global Report of Public Financial Management.
“The Global Report on Public Financial Management presents the most comprehensive periodic examination of the state of PFM worldwide” and “the development of the Global Report came on time to reflect the emerging PFM issues during the pandemic and to make PEFA program even more important”. Ed Olowo-Okere, Global Director, World Bank highlighted the importance of the new report at the launch event.
Around 400 experts attended the launch, interested to learn more about the PEFA Initiative and the 2020 Global Report on PFM. Some insights from the event:
“Good planning and budgeting are not enough, unless we have a strong budget execution system to implement the budget as planned and approved” said Sailendra Narayan Pattanayak - Deputy Division Chief Fiscal Affairs Department at IMF.
Fredson Yamba - Secretary to the Treasury Ministry of Finance, Zambia underlined that “While country context is very important for PFM reforms, the trends in PFM progress at the global and regional levelswill give us a broad direction of where we need to aspire to be.”
The Associate Professor at London School of Economics and Political Science - Joachim Wehner, added that the Global Report and its finding could be used on more profound PFM research: “This pandemic will expose some longstanding weaknesses that the Global Report and its findings have captured in oversight and accountability institutions.”
Adenike Oyeyiola, Practice Manager, World Bank focusing on the need for stronger governance in post-COVID world said, “the Covid-19 pandemic has destabilized the global economy and it has shown how effective and strong governance institutions form foundations of good governance.”
