Public Financial Management in the 21st Century: "Harnessing Data for Better Policy Making"
Focusing exclusively on Asia and Africa
Wednesday, February 24th, 2021

The ambitious targets set by the Sustainable Development Goals, which are now at risk due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, have put additional emphasis on the importance of effective and efficient public financial management (PFM) in the achievement of policy objectives. In contribution to this global agenda, the Public Expenditure and Financial Accountability (PEFA) program has capitalized on its extensive database of PEFA assessments to produce the first Global Report on Public Financial Management.
Where data are available, the report uses interactive data visualizations, short analyses, and country examples to highlight performance changes in PFM at the global, regional and country level, as well as over time and across the key areas of the budget cycle. It adds to the global policy dialogue on PFM reforms by providing a comprehensive forward look at evolving PFM practices and their relationship with relevant governance initiatives, such as gender equality.
This virtual event will introduce the Global Report as an evidence-based tool for tracking and monitoring trends in PFM performance. It will also convene practitioners, policymakers, researchers, and development partners for a discussion on the role of PFM in the 21st Century post-COVID, highlighting how PFM data can be harnessed for better policy making. The event will focus on emerging trends and discuss options for the future from perspectives of Asia and Africa.
